7 Spellbinding Photos That Will Inspire You to Visit the Sahara

When I was a young girl I made reading books into an art form. I could and would read anywhere – buses, boats, trains. I would read anything from Tarzan to Sylvia Plath. But I particularly loved tales of fantasy and adventure. One of my all-time favorites was a classic called “King of the Wind.” Set in Morocco it’s the tale of a famous racehorse. The desert is featured almost like a character in this award-winning young adult novel and my fascination with the Sahara was born.

While in Morocco for a few months in 2016 I had the chance to spend a few days in the desert. It was not entirely what I expected, but it certainly didn’t disappoint. It was cold in December. Which was strange to me because I didn’t know it even got cold there. I always think of it as blazing hot all of the time and popular culture and movies only show it that way. The biggest upside of the colder weather was there were very few tourists around and we had most of the sweeping views all to ourselves.

I’d like to go back someday and experience the intensity of the desert in summer, but overall I think these images show it was worth every minute of the stomach-churning ride over the Atlas Mountains to be there.
